In the Bowels of a Horse-Shaped Cloud

by Stephanie Smith

In the bowels of a horse-shaped cloud
slumbered the moon in oblivion.
She dreamt of the dark stallion trotting to the sky
and, by the gods, immortalized
to choose a mortal's fate.
The cloud's shape shifted.
A demon's head spawned into existence.
Mouth opened wide,
it swallowed all the stars in the sky.
The head split in two and
excreted the immortal moon.
It feared she would plot revenge—
for the cloud had devoured her children.
