Away from Home
by Gary Davis
I fly through gnarly oaks,
catching trills from screech-owls.
The animals know me.
They have that extra sense.
I commune with the crows,
like goddess Morrigan.
By day I sleep cozy,
hear few footsteps above.
Nighttime is when I reign,
amidst chirps and flutters.
Still, I’m always longing,
searching for that someplace.
I wish I were back home,
sound asleep in my bed,
instead of in this grave
for the unknown unmarked dead.
