Carol of the Dark Sky
by Meg Smith
Advent turns in the same cycle
year to year. The same songs of hope
stir the chill of the air, and
candle flames flutter close to the page.
I don't always know
what we're celebrating.
Outside, we look up. Stars and worlds
radiate their cold light in
unending night. Perhaps they
will gleam in kindness, in the breath
that forms frost in every singing note
of the beseeching chorus of Earth.
