The Delivery
by Gary Davis
The derelict ship looms up ahead,
silently orbiting blue Neptune.
It's massive, silvery and spherical,
mistaken for decades as a moon.
Two NASA-nauts avidly latch on,
looking for an entrance airlock.
Then they spy a razor-jagged hole,
cut long ago by an errant space rock.
The two maneuver this way and that,
jetting into the now dark spaceport.
They search every nook and cranny
but get no reply, no report.
Two faint red lights pop on dead ahead.
The Earthlings rush to investigate.
They find two foggy life-support pods,
enclosing things in suspended state.
The astronauts hover and touch,
detecting faint motion within.
Glass shatters, claws rip, pincer fangs suck!
Two Earthlings now a shell of bone and skin.
The vampires exchange satiated smiles.
Their first fresh blood in ninety trillion miles.
