The Darkness Between Stars

by Alexis Child

I have wandered the earth
In the darkness, a priestess of fools
Under the Hunter's Moon
The sky is fractured for this final climb

My feet are sore
I am knocking, let me in the door
And yet I cannot go
Where you haunt my nights

Afraid of this silent tomb
I tried to forget about you
Where ancient winds blow
And seasons change

I tried to deny you
Where it rains and the dead wait
For me to catch my breath

All the sons of man burned me
I died in the quivering flames
Making eye contact with lunatics
I am incomplete, maimed

Lord, it hurts too much
I make the villagers nervous
The tyrant spell has bound me
The body snatchers they have come
Certitude of death

Life is a choice of evils
Among the vanquished
A sullen silence of despair

The City is of night
The world is full of weeping
And out flies winged gargoyles
Waking the dead

The vultures whisper to cold flesh
Mary Magdalene weeps
Tears of blood at the sepulchre
Seven messengers keep the stars apart

A blind Theban is watching
I hear the screaming skeletons of Brasília
And the laughter of seven thieves

The thirteen skeletons are dancing
In graveyards with ghastly bones
I drink in their darkness like a ghost

Beneath the crushed flowers
There is one candle between us
The exodus of demons

The book burns to flames
The devil howls at the winter moon
And I am choked with blood
Instead of the cross

You travel with me to a distant abyss
Inside my spirit like a rabid dog
Choke. Choke.
Flesh of my flesh, bone of my bone

I have come through wind and rain
To make a covenant with you
Prophetic and poetic
Heart and soul

Throw a ring of salt
To protect us from our faults
Blood of mortal, blood of beast
Mingling as one

Ancient rites, time has come
The path of new life, old to young
Power abounds, magic is the source
Between earth and Mars
There is only the stillness of the stars

The fleshless night
Is full of sorrow
And raindrops of the dead

Blackened clouds turn a reddish hue
To give you that letter, what should I do?
But then I remember that all I want is you
And the world is left to darkness to me and you

Alexis Child hails from Toronto, Canada; home to dreams and nightmares. Alexis is a former Social Service Worker, befriending the demons that roam freely amongst her writings. She had a small measure of underground success with her gothic rock and darkwave bands in the past. Besides having rare mystical experiences she hopes are not just short circuits in the brain, she offers Tarot Readings and writes poetry and fiction, starving in the garret with her muse. A starving child is a frightful sight. A starving vampire is even worse. Please donate non-perishable food items and B-negative blood (and make it a double!).

Alexis' fiction has been featured in Danse Macabre, Schlock, Screams of Terror, and U.K.'s Dark of Night Magazine. Her poetry has been featured in numerous online and print publications, including Aphelion, The Horror Zine, Illumen, Metaphysical Times, Night to Dawn, ParABnormal Magazine, The Sirens Call and elsewhere. Her first collection of poetry, Devil in the Clock, a dark and sinister slice of the macabre is available on Amazon. Her second collection of poetry, Singing the Bones, is available on Amazon and from Cyberwit Publishing. Her third collection of poetry, Exquisite Corpse, is coming soon. You have been warned...
