The Mermaid's Song
by Stephanie Smith
The sea caresses me
I'm attracted to the moon
and the mermaid's hair
It's strung with seaweed
and remnants of a trickster's skin —
her last lover she drowned
some fathoms deep
He lies on the seabed now
in eternal sleep
A lullaby in his head —
the one she sang to him
the night they wed
on the moon-drenched shore
But she sings no more —
Not even for me
