Queen of the Damned

by Alexis Child

A mad queen is born
Eye-lids closed
Turning to fire
Burning up fear

The broken life
Gathers round like witnesses
Faces whisper behind my own
"We cannot leave it here!"

Rumors of a sick town
Spitting out blood and stone
The city is alive with tumors
Hearts half-dead rising
Fly like dead birds in a dream
We whip like wild beasts
Unforeseen happenings
To anoint ourselves with

On this day of waiting
Point to the star that guides us on
Thoughts are suicide-notes by daytime
I dream at night learning its ways
Bringing back nothing
But holes in my suitcase
Empty!
Still saying good-bye

Home is long-ago
Go on your way
Shoulders hunched in uncertainty
I can no longer sleep
Shall I unlock every door?
Bitching in a double-bed
For a taste of beauty
In a preserved city

Doors open to all who can see
Its antiseptic dreams

Alexis Child hails from Toronto, Canada; home to dreams and nightmares. She worked at a Call Crisis Center befriending demons of the mind that roam freely amongst her writings. Alexis once lived with a Calico-cat child sleuthing all that went bump in the night and is haunted by the memory of her cat. She has had a small measure of underground success with her gothic rock and darkwave bands in the past. Alexis is currently working on her second collection of poetry.

Her fiction has been featured in Danse Macabre, Schlock, Screams of Terror, and U.K.’s Dark of Night Magazine. Her poetry has been featured in numerous online and print publications, including Aphelion, Black Petals, Blood Moon Rising Magazine, The Horror Zine, The Sirens Call and elsewhere. Her first collection of poetry, Devil In The Clock, a dark and sinister slice of macabre gothic, horror, surreal, and supernatural poetry is now available on Amazon.
