Rock On Space

by Robin B. Lipinski

Primitive monkeys, hooting and hollering
Swinging from earthly vine
Flinging excrement, fighting, sexing
Passing the time until discovery of sounding hollow log
and flame.

Trumpets and cadence as Roman soldiers beat countries into line
Ballads played to tune royalty and appease peasants alike
Crooners singing
Music at births and executions
Drummer beating a rhythm of time.

Modern man, evolved and so proud, leaving their tail hanging from a forgotten tree
Electronic commands to summon the acoustical gods, beating synthetic skins in tribute
BOOM!
BOOM!
THUD!
THUD!
THUMP!
THUMP!

Stereo with surround sound
Television sets blaring concerts until the eardrums scream
All around, a planet beating vibrations
Population hard-wired to hear as they please

Planetary bodies careening masses leaving no sounds
No Nova announcing trillions of tons of distorted matter
Only the coming sounds of mankind’s horror will be heard
as the asteroid beats some humility into humanity.
