Hell-o-wiener

by Robin B. Lipinski

Babe, the talking pig was the talk, the wonder of the world.
Religions were turned on their heads and the children now had talking proof on what used to be
imagination…

So much changed so fast, even so, traditions.
Vegetarians were marching in pride saying, "We were right, eating meat is cruel, eat carrots!"
July 4th was now fireworks and lettuce.
Thanksgiving was now tofu turkey and turnips.
But still, some still held a steak knife…

Such is fate when feeling safe and secure, and Babe was soon to find out.
Murphy's law or maybe the gods were envious but the truck driver was new to the route, when he made his pick up.
Tragic that day, the errors combined as poor babe had talked and talked and talked so much, his voice was hoarse and left him.
Some say strep, or maybe laryngitis, but the pig was now at a loss of words when the man backed up his truck.

"Squeal! Squeal! Squeal! (cough, cough)"
Normal reaction for a pig beaten with a stick, up the ramp, to join the others headed to slaughter.
The driver remarked, "Feisty little bugger, almost as if it knows what's coming"

later, this month even, the tragic error was still in the news.
Obituary
Politicians giving speeches of regret
and so sad the children, dressing for Halloween in his memory, as a pink little pig.

Doorbell ringing to announce little beggars, one such child a pig.
"Trick or treat," said in unison
I smiled as I dropped in the chocolates with one hand and eating a hot, juicy dog in the other wrapped in lettuce.
I was there, the new driver, and my error was great indeed,
but you know what?
That talking pig, Babe, made for one mighty fine tasting,
wiener…
