The Compliance Officer

To be human
is to be vulnerable,
no one knew that
better than he--
under the color
of authority
he hid in the open.
We felt his eyes
following us
and we feared
suspicion--
but something darker
lurked under that uniform--
something more sinister
was hiding
behind the badge.
Now we never
look at anyone
quite the same.
