Hello and welcome to the July 2023 issue of Aphelion!

Summertime has arrived in Georgia. The temperature is somewhere between "melting flesh" and "concrete is now a boiling liquid." Automobile drivers are comparing the best brands of oven mitts to use when gripping the steering wheels of their cars. The surface of Venus is being advertised as a "cooling vacation getway" akin to touring Greenland, Antarctica, and Alaska. Most sensible people plan their outdoor activities for the time between dusk and dawn. in short, it's a mite warmish down here. Demons have opened an ice skating rink in Atlanta. The really-wealthy people cannot afford to buy a new air conditioner. The good news is that you don't have to buy charcoal for BBQs, just put the meat on the grill and it will be air-fried to a crackly crunch in less than 30 minutes...

It's not all doom and gloom. Thunderstorm season is well in progress. With the torrential rain ofttimes comes cooling temperatures, as well as free steam-baths! As for writing prompts, imagine an alien planet where the ambient temperature is half-to-five quarters the temp of boiling water. It could be worse. Imagine all those pleasant beaches that are favorite vacation destinations for Southerners have now been relocated 500 miles inland by the rapidly-melting polar ice caps. My property taxes will quintuple because I now have ocean-front property, without having to move house anywhere!

Now I understand Elon... During their exploration of Mars, our rovers have recorded temperatures ranging from midday highs of about 35 degrees C. (95 degrees F.) in Spring and Summer to nighttime lows of about minus 110 degrees C. (minus 166 degrees F.) Prime vacation territory! As long as you remember where your blankets are come sundown, LOL!

Aside from all the other trials and tribulations, I now have only 25 weeks until I retire and become a "wealthy pensioner..."

All that said, it's time for a change of pace.

The online streaming shows "Stupid O'clock" and "Last Man Standing" have been uploaded live to YouTube as well as several Facebook pages for over two years now. They are basically live-streaming chat shows covering a range of topics, modeled on the types of conversations people have after hours at SF&F conventions. Joe McKeel and I have archives of past shows on our own YouTube channels. Check 'em out if that sounds like something you'd enjoy I've put links in our Features section that will take you to the YouTube archives of both shows.

With that said, it's high time I shut up and let you get to reading.

Enjoy yourselves,

Dan
