Hello and welcome to the July 2022 issue of Aphelion! Thank you all for
helping keep us going through
the past quarter-century!
We
have a new Short Story Editor, who is taking over with the July issue.
Jean-Paul L. Garnier is his name, and he is the owner of Space Cowboy
Books, a science fiction specialty bookstore in Joshua Tree CA, the
producer and editor of Simultaneous Times SF podcast, and the current
editor of the SFPA's Star*Line Magazine. Fine qualifications, indeed! I
will be forwarding to him all the recent submissions I've received, as
well as changing the email link for submissions so that they all go to
him. Jean-Paul is willing to gift us with six month to a year of his
time, so let's make him feel welcome!
I have been working massive amounts
of overtime at the factory. New people to train and only 18 months left
before my retirement. I'm making hay while the sun shines, so
to speak. II'm making headway on the fantasy novel, to. So I hope to be
able to turn it in to my publisher before Winter sets in. I
hope to be allowed to do an oil painting for the cover art. I've been
given the go-ahead to do the painting, so we shall see if I still know
which end of a brush to hold onto, LOL! If the painting is all I hope
it to be, I am promised that it will be given serious consideration.
Keep your fingers crossed, folks.
As for personal news; LibertyCon 34
was last month and it was every bit the grand adventure tht LC always
has been. This was our first live LC since 2019! Proper protocalls were
observed for health and safety, of course. They weren't too intrusive,
either. Mostly common sense and thorough cleaning of the panel rooms
between panels, tables socially distanced in the Con Suite and hotel
restaurants, hand sanitizer stations all over the hotel, and heightened
cleaning standards by the hotel staff. It was great fun, and we're
looking forward to next year.
As for my wife and I, we'll be
attending Hallowcon over Halloween weekend in Dalton GA. as our only
other convention appearance this year. I went last year for the first
time and completely fell in love with the intimate, "small con"
atmosphere. I highly recommend it if you live near enough to Dalton to
attend.
The online streaming shows "Stupid
O'clock" and "Last Man Standing" are still being uploaded live to
YouTube as
well as several Facebook pages. There is an archive there
of almost two years worth of shows now. They are
basically live-streaming chat shows covering a range of topics, modeled
on the types of conversations people have during the "after hours" at
SF&F
conventions. Joe McKeel--the Showrunner of Hallowcon-- and I have our
own archives of past shows on our respective
YouTube channels. Check 'em out if that sounds like something you'd
enjoy I've put links in our Features section that will take you to the
YouTube archives of both shows.
With all that said, it's high time I
shut up and let you get to reading.
Enjoy
yourselves,
Dan
