Evolution
by Meghashri Dalvi
The alien was perplexed. “Your planet's evolution is intriguing, but flawed,” it said in a halting voice. “Your species took too long to advance."
I did not argue because it was true. “It did. But that also led to diversity, complexity, and resilience. Look at the variety of complex life, ecosystems, and food webs we have."
“Nah. Efficiency and speed matter. On our planet, it was swift with just a single rich ecosystem, ensuring our rapid progress." The tall spindly creature sort of crinkled its nose.
“But diversity is our strength. We can easily adapt to diverse environments." Not sure why, but I continued talking. Hoping that it would lead somewhere useful.
It only smirked.
I pressed again. “The diversity and slow evolution gave rise to art, culture, and innovation. The things we cherish so much.”
“Perhaps. But then you have still not colonized your solar system. What’s the use of culture if you cannot spread it across galaxies?”
Wow! This one didn’t mince words. I mean words that came through its bizarre translation device.
“Well, time to standardize things on your planet.” It said nonchalantly and pressed a button. Shiny green button.
And then there were about a hundred humans in a group around me. With the pink creature glaring down upon us.
“Done. You are the last ones your species on this planet, retained as samples till we complete the evolution in our own way.”
