APOCALYPSE NOT NOW

by William E. Overton

  "A team of astronomers announced today", the man on the radio was saying, "that a newly discovered asteroid will collide with the earth on November fourteenth of 2020."

 My birthday!  I'll be eighty years old! I don't need this!

"The asteroid is about half a mile in diameter, and their calculations indicate that it will either graze or directly impact the Earth at a speed of between twelve and fifteen miles per second."

Wonderful!  Six years until the end of civilization!

"According to experts, effects of even a passage through Earth's atmosphere may include tsunamis, hurricane-level winds and drastic climate change," the radio continued.  "An actual collision would also put enough dust into the air to block the sun for several years and effectively destroy the global ecology."

I don't think I'm going to put up with this.  I really don't.

                    * * * * *

"Although they are unable to explain the error in their original calculations, astronomers now say that the new asteroid will miss the Earth by about half a million miles."

Much better!
