Two Halves
by Botond Teklesz
I have been working on the interface for quite some time. It was to be a virtual world, shaped on the outside reality.
The perfect algorithms were running infinitely in the programming
software, and one day there she was the woman of my dreams, captive in
the labyrinth of virtual reality, a frail yet sublime creature,
behaving just as if she were real. Except that she was everything but
real. I created her to be my companion, for the world outside has
become unfair, subhuman and utterly disgusting as far as I was
concerned.
The electrodes attached to my head interacted with the software, and
basically all I had to do was to let my imagination run freely. My
favorite fantasy was centering her and I, and after a while it
became quite a challenge to distinguish between us.
Eve was awaiting as I descended the hill. The black night surrounded
everything. Her electronic eyes shone brightly against the dim light of
the starlit sky.
" I was never meant to be," she spoke in her soft voice. " I don' t have a soul."
"Define the word soul Eve," I replied.
"The fox in The Little Prince had a soul," she said.
The dim shade suddenly changed into broad daylight. She was
holding a small glass sphere. She came closer for me to take a look
inside of it. Inside the glass there was a splendid red rose.
" I could not find the fox," she spoke.
The program ended and I was left staring at the empty screen of the computer.
