Floating

by G. Thomas Edwards

We are alone out here
in the waves and radiation
surrounded by dark matter.
No scream
for help will be heard
but the boat it is strong

and carries
all we need.
If you look, there
to the night sky
you will see what it is we all want to know
are there more like us?

Adrift, they, too, search for anomalies,
search for lights and sound
for patterns, a glow
that will somehow show
we are here
floating amongst them.

We spin,
we accelerate
away from the beginning
toward destination and fate
where beyond quantum shores
infinite destinies await.

Relentlessly are we drawn
by misaligned, self-imagined forces
into the dark
like Santiago in his skiff
we can never concede
to that uncertainty.

Hemingway tried to explain,
about the unknown,
about the universal battles we all must face.
About goals, persistence,
and respect for that, we do not understand.
He knew there is no joy in just cutting bait.
