In My World

by Ryan Hansen

James B. Tiller was the kind of man whose house you stayed away from on Halloween. The children told stories of him murdering his wife and children. Although only children believed these stories, the fact was that they were true, twenty years ago on a cold dark starless night  he had taken all of them into the shed. Ignoring their pleas for mercy he shot them each once in the head.

The odd thing was thing was that he still talked to his family everyday in fact he didn’t even know they were dead. Every night they would gather and chat about each others days.

“How was work today?”

“Good thank you for asking. Timothy did you enjoy school?”

“Yeah, but James was being mean to me again.”

“Would you like me to talk to the principal”

The conversations would carry on late into the night.

One night these visions changed from their calm and comforting selves to something much more frightening. All this family spoke as one.

“James took his family to the shed, Shot them all in the head.”

On and on they repeated these words. James grabbed at his ears in a vain attempt to block them out. Alas there is no escape from your own mind. Slowly he got up his hands shaking got up and walked over the his desk opened the top drawer and grabbed the same gun he had used to kill his family all those years ago. He gently leveled the gun to his head and pulled the trigger.

THE END
